IPL 2027: BCCI Calls 15 October Meeting With Impact Player Rule Under Review

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has called a joint meeting of Indian Premier League stakeholders in Mumbai on 15 October, the first formal step in planning for the 2027 season, which will be the league's 20th.

Who is attending

Invitations were sent by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to franchise owners and chief executives, the state associations that host matches, and the league's broadcasters. The meeting will review issues from last season and begin preparations for the next.

The Impact Player question

The future of the Impact Player rule is expected to be the main talking point. The rule, which allows a team to substitute one player during a match, has been criticised by several Indian captains and franchise coaches, who argue that it reduces the role of all-rounders.

The board has not said whether the rule will be kept, modified or scrapped. A decision is expected in the coming weeks, before the player-retention deadline is announced.

Auction expected in Goa

The 2027 player auction will be a mini-auction rather than a full reset, meaning franchises keep the core of their squads and bid to fill specific gaps. Saikia has said it will be held in Goa in December. No date has been confirmed, though the middle of the month, around 15 and 16 December, has been indicated by league officials.

Retentions and trades

Reports suggest franchises will have until mid-November to submit their retained and released players, although the board has yet to announce a deadline. The trading window remains open in the meantime, and several high-profile moves have been reported but not officially confirmed by the league.
